AC Compressor Failure: Signs, Causes & Repair Options
Updated January 2026 • 6 min read
The Big Question: When the compressor fails, you face a choice: replace the compressor ($1,500-3,000+) or replace the entire system. The right answer depends on your system's age and condition.
What Does the Compressor Do?
The compressor is the heart of your AC system. It pumps refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units, enabling the heat transfer that cools your home. When it fails, your AC can't cool at all.
Signs of Compressor Problems
Warning Signs:
- AC not cooling at all - Most obvious sign
- Outdoor unit not running - Fan runs but compressor doesn't
- Strange noises from outdoor unit - Grinding, clicking, or humming
- Tripped breaker repeatedly - Compressor drawing too much power
- Hard starting - System struggles to turn on
- Warm air from vents - Blower works but no cooling
Common Causes of Compressor Failure
- Refrigerant leaks: Running low on refrigerant makes the compressor work harder and overheat
- Dirty coils: Restricted airflow causes overheating
- Electrical problems: Voltage spikes, bad capacitors, or faulty wiring
- Lack of maintenance: Preventable issues that compound over time
- Age: Compressors typically last 10-15 years with proper care
Repair vs. Replace: The Honest Assessment
Consider Compressor Replacement If:
- System is less than 8-10 years old
- Rest of the system is in good condition
- Uses R-410A refrigerant (not R-22)
- Compressor is still under warranty
Consider Full System Replacement If:
- System is 12+ years old
- Uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out, expensive)
- History of other problems
- Repair cost exceeds 50% of new system cost
- Other components are also failing
We'll give you an honest assessment. Sometimes compressor replacement makes sense. Often, on older systems, you're better off putting that money toward new equipment with a full warranty.
