How Often Should You Change Your AC Filter?

Updated January 2026 • 4 min read

Quick Answer: Most homes should change filters every 1-3 months. In Texas, where AC runs heavily during summer, monthly changes are often necessary during peak cooling season.

Why Filter Changes Matter

A dirty filter is the #1 cause of preventable HVAC problems. When your filter gets clogged:

  • Airflow decreases, making your system work harder
  • Energy bills increase (up to 15% higher)
  • System components wear out faster
  • Evaporator coil can freeze
  • Indoor air quality suffers

Filter Change Schedule by Type

Standard 1" Fiberglass Filters

Change every: 30 days
These thin filters clog quickly, especially during heavy AC use.

Pleated 1" Filters

Change every: 60-90 days
More surface area means longer life, but check monthly during summer.

4" Media Filters

Change every: 6-12 months
These thicker filters hold more dirt. Still check quarterly.

Factors That Require More Frequent Changes

Change More Often If You Have:

  • Pets: Pet hair and dander clog filters fast
  • Allergies: Cleaner filters mean fewer symptoms
  • Dusty area: New construction, dirt roads, or older homes
  • Large family: More people = more dust and debris
  • AC running constantly: Texas summers push filters harder

How to Check Your Filter

Don't just follow the calendar—actually look at your filter:

  1. Turn off your HVAC system
  2. Locate your filter (return vent or air handler)
  3. Remove and hold up to light
  4. If you can't see light through it, replace it
  5. Gray is expected; dark gray or black means it's overdue

Which Filter Should You Buy?

We generally recommend a MERV 8-11 pleated filter for most homes. Higher MERV ratings (13+) filter more particles but restrict airflow—not ideal unless your system is designed for them.

Avoid: Cheap fiberglass filters (don't filter well) and ultra-high MERV filters (restrict airflow unless your system supports them).
