Thermostat Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide
Updated January 2026 • 4 min read
Before assuming your HVAC system needs repair, check your thermostat. Many "system failures" are actually simple thermostat issues you can fix yourself.
DIY Thermostat Checks
1. Replace the Batteries
Most thermostats use AA or AAA batteries. Low batteries can cause:
- Blank or dim display
- System not responding to commands
- Erratic behavior or random shutoffs
Even hardwired thermostats often have backup batteries. Replace them annually.
2. Check the Settings
Verify these common settings:
- Mode: Is it set to HEAT, COOL, or AUTO?
- Fan setting: AUTO or ON?
- Temperature: Is target temp higher (heat) or lower (cool) than current?
- Schedule: Did a programmed schedule change the settings?
3. Check Circuit Breakers
Your HVAC system has breakers in your electrical panel. If the thermostat is blank and not battery-powered, check if a breaker tripped.
4. Check the Furnace Switch
There's usually a switch on or near your furnace that looks like a light switch. Someone may have accidentally turned it off.
When to Call a Professional
Call for Service If:
- Thermostat is working but system doesn't respond - Issue is with the HVAC equipment
- Thermostat shows error codes - May indicate system problem
- Loose or exposed wires - Don't touch; call a pro
- Thermostat is hot to the touch - Possible wiring issue
- Recent power surge - Could have damaged control board
Thermostat Upgrade Considerations
If your thermostat is old or acting up frequently, upgrading might make sense:
- Smart thermostats: Learn your schedule, remote control, energy reports
- WiFi thermostats: Adjust from your phone when away
- Programmable thermostats: Set schedules for automatic adjustments
We can help you choose the right thermostat for your system and lifestyle.
